Psoriasis is a chronic, recurring skin condition with no known cure. It produces red, scaly skin plaques that can can cause discomfort, disfigurement and embarrassment. Social withdrawal and even depression are not uncommon among psoriasis sufferers. The second most common skin disorder in the United States, psoriasis affects an estimated 7 million Americans. An estimated 150,000 to 260,000 new cases are diagnosed each year.
Light years ahead of other treatment methods, the laser is designed to provide effective relief from unsightly and sometimes painful psoriatic skin lesions.
For the first time in their lives, psoriasis sufferers have a real hope for relief from unsightly and sometimes painful skin lesions without the need for messy creams or lotions, thanks to a revolutionary new laser treatment. Using a carefully focused beam of light delivered through a sophisticated fiber-optic device, the
psoriasis laser can help treat psoriatic skin lesions quickly and effectively without exposing healthy skin to potentially harmful ultraviolet rays. Individuals with psoriasis can often obtain relief in just four to ten treatment sessions. Most treatments last only a few minutes, and relief can often last for many months.
Psoriasis is the second most common skin disorder in the United States and is estimated to affect 7 million Americans. The disease can show itself at any age and usually appears as red, scaly plaques that start on the elbows and knees. These flaky areas of skin can progress to cause patches all over the body and there is a great tendency for the condition to cause severe dandruff, redness, and flakiness on the scalp. Many patients experience discomfort, disfigurement, and embarrassment. In severe situations, social withdrawal and even depression can occur.
Since there is no cure, most psoriasis sufferers endure a continuous program of applying expensive prescription creams that contain cortisone, tar, vitamin D, or forms of retinoic acid. Patients with more severe forms of psoriasis often benefit from ultraviolet light treatments referred to as phototherapy or PUVA with excellent results. During these treatment sessions, the patient stands disrobed in a light booth surrounded by long ultraviolet fluorescent bulbs. Treatments take place in a dermatologist's office up to three times a week and may continue for many months. When psoriasis does not respond to the light treatments, some patients must resort to powerful internal drugs exposing them to possible drug-related side effects.
The new laser offers a major breakthrough for patients with mild and moderate psoriasis since only 4 to 10 treatments are required for clearing in most patients. The beam of the
laser only treats the individual skin lesions; thus normal skin does not have
to be exposed to the ultraviolet rays. During treatment, psoriasis sufferers do not need to purchase or apply medicated creams or lotions.
On the first visit, the dermatologist may perform a test to determine the optimum dosage level for the individual's skin. The day following the test, the patient returns to begin treatments. Treatments involve having the technician move the laser hand-piece over the affected area, "painting" it with laser light. Depending on the size of the lesion, this takes just a few minutes. Although results vary from person to person, relief is often obtained in just five to
fifteen brief treatment sessions (two to three treatments per week). Many people see results within
four or five treatments.
The laser has none of the drawbacks often associated with other psoriasis treatments, such as premature aging of healthy skin, skin thinning, or resistance to medication. Most patients feel no pain or discomfort during the treatments and no anesthesia is necessary. Although the
laser is not a cure for psoriasis, many patients achieve clear skin for many
months. It also appears that patients will need less future treatments per
year to remain symptom free. Only a few leading physicians are equipped to
provide this cutting-edge treatment for psoriasis. We are proud to be one of
the first centers to offer this psoriasis treatment to our patients in our main Yuba City, CA, office.
